What is IPL Hair Removal?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike laser hair removal, which uses a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light to target the pigment in hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then converts to heat, damaging the follicle and inhibiting future hair growth.
Here at Indulgences Newcastle, we offer IPL hair removal with Venus Versus which is one of the best, gentle and non-invasive treatments on the market where each device has a real-time, built-in cooling system and uses innovative smart-pulse technology for the most effective, and comfortable experience as possible.
How Does IPL Hair Removal Work?
Preparation
Before an IPL session, the treatment area needs to be prepped and cleaned, void of any creams, makeup or fake tan residue. You also need to have hair follicles present, so avoid any method of hair removal in the weeks leading up to your appointment (aside from shaving) to ensure the best possible results.
Application
During the treatment, our therapists will take the small handheld device to emit pulses of light onto the skin, over the desired area. This light energy penetrates the skin and is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair
Heat Conversion
Once absorbed by the hair, the light energy converts to heat, which then damages the hair follicle, disrupting the hair growth cycle.
Repetition
IPL works best in the anagen stage of the hair growth cycle (where the root of the hair is the largest), and considering not all hairs are in the same stage at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary to ensure the best possible results.
What Are The Benefits of IPL Hair Removal?
Long-term results
Unlike shaving or waxing, which offer temporary results, IPL can significantly reduce hair growth over time. With consistent treatment, many people experience long-lasting smoothness.
Convenient, quick & precise
IPL hair removal is a quick and effective treatment that offers highly targeted, accurate results. Depending on the specific area, a session can be as little as 5 minutes to 45 minutes.
Less Pain
While some clients experience sensitivity and heat, similar to a mild snap, like a rubber band against the skin, IPL is generally considered less painful compared to alternative methods like waxing or when accidents occur from shaving.
Reduced ingrown hairs
As you’re targeting the individual hair follicle, penetrating and damaging it at the root as opposed to cutting or ripping the hair out, this will result in significantly less re-growth and thus, reduce the chance of any ingrown hairs.
Versatility
Because of how targeted you can be with IPL hair removal, it means you can use it across multiple parts of the body. Whether that’s the face, legs, arms, underarms, and/or bikini area, it’s a convenient method of hair removal.
Skin Improvements
Besides hair removal, IPL can also help improve skin texture and tone. It can reduce pigmentation, sun spots, and even minor vascular lesions, giving you smoother and more even-toned skin. What’s more to love?!
What to Expect During and After Your Treatment
Pre-treatment Prep
For IPL to be most effective, your skin needs to be clean void of any creams, residue or makeup, so that it can effectively target the hair follicle. Once in salon, our therapists will go over the area with an antiseptic wipe however if you can, avoid using any deodorant, moisturiser, fake tan or moisturiser on the day of your appointment.
During Treatment
As our therapists run the device over your skin, you may feel a warm sensation or slight discomfort during the procedure. Somewhat similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, it won’t last long and our therapists will always make sure you’re feeling as comfortable as possible during your treatment.
Post-Treatment Care
While IPL hair removal typically has no downtime, after the treatment, you may be slightly red or swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically subsides within a few hours and for the following 24 hours post-treatment, avoid any direct sun sunlight and we recommend holding off on any hot showers, saunas or intense exercise that may cause excess heat in the skin.
Results
Following your first appointment, you will start to see the hair fall out anywhere from 4-6 weeks. Most people require 10-12 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.
Is IPL Hair Removal Right for You?
While IPL hair removal is effective for many people, it’s important to note, that depending on your skin pigment, hair and genetic disposition, it may not be suitable for everyone.
Generally speaking, IPL hair removal is considered most effective on individuals with light skin and dark hair, as the contrast allows the light to target the hair pigment more effectively. Those with very dark skin or overly light hair may not see the same results so alternative hair removal methods may be better suited.
If you’re unsure, feel free to ask our therapists when you’re next in-salon and we can help advise what will be best suited to you.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does IPL Hair removal actually work?
Yes! However, this will always depend on the individual and their specific hair and skin type. Ask our therapists if you’re unsure.
How long does IPL Hair removal last?
Following your first appointment, you should start to see the hairs fall out anywhere from 4-6 weeks .
How many sessions will I need to see results?
For best results, we recommend at least 4-6 sessions per targeted area, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Once you’ve completed the initial treatment plan, depending on the individual, you may only require a top-up session every 8-10 weeks to maintain your desired results.
Is there any downtime required with IPL Hair Removal?
Not at all! You’re able to go about your day as usual immediately post-treatment. While some clients may experience redness, heat or experience raised red bumps following their treatment, this will subside within a few hours.
When is the best time to get IPL Hair Removal?
Because IPL is attracted to the dark pigment found in the hair follicle, we recommend starting your IPL hair removal journey in winter when there is the most contrast between the hair follicle and your skin.
Not only will this ensure a more targeted result, as you’ve had less sun exposure and the skin pigment will be its lightest, but it will allow enough time to complete your treatment, resulting in soft, smooth, silky skin ahead of Summer.
